How to make your blocks

Our block collections have letters (A to Z) and digits (0 to 9). Spell any name, word, or number!

Your download includes three block sizes, each a different template, so you can optimize paper usage (Letter or A4 sheets):
2-inch block (2″x 2″x 2″) = 1 page to print
4-inch block (4″x 4″x 4″) = 3 pages to print
6-inch block (6″x 6″x 6″) = 6 pages to print

For other sizes (up to 6 inches high), scale designs when printing. For example, to make 3-inch blocks, print the 4-inch blocks scaled to 75% of the original size.

scoring is the secret to beautiful folds

KEY STEPS

RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES

PAPER
Ideally, use US Letter or A4 medium-weight cardstock or matte photo paper. Example: 65 lb cover or 176 gsm.

SCORING TOOL
To score the fold lines, use a solid object with a straight edge, like a ruler, and a solid tool with a blunt point or tip, such as a butter knife, a bone folder, an inkless pen, or even a paper clip.

CUTTING TOOL
You only need scissors to cut, but you can also use a craft knife or cutting machine, such as Cricut or Silhouette.

GLUE OR DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE
To glue the flaps, use permanent glue or double-sided tape.

STEP 1 – DOWNLOAD

Your printable files come as a single ZIP file. Download it immediately after purchase: your download link will be available right after checkout.

Double-click the ZIP file once you've downloaded it to view your designs.

STEP 2 – PRINT

✂️ Cutting by hand? Use PDF files.
🔌 Cutting machine? Use PNG files.

Your files are ready to print. They are professionally designed and will print on inkjet or laser printers, including your home printer.

If you're printing at home, open your printer settings to select the correct paper type and print quality. Make sure you are printing out your files at their actual size (100% scale).

You can also print your designs at a local print shop, copy center, or use an online printing service. Popular options for printing online are staples.com and fedexoffice.com.

STEP 3 – SCORE

Scoring is easy, makes folding faster, and results in more beautiful folds. To score, line up a ruler with the fold lines and run the scoring tool (such as a butter knife or bone folder) along the ruler's edge. Try to apply even pressure along the way.

The scoring tool pushes the paper down, leaving indented lines. After cutting the designs, you will fold them on these indented lines, or creases.

Scoring by hand is quite simple, but if you are using a cutting machine, you can also use it to score with the SVG and DXF files included.

STEP 4 – CUT

Use a pair of scissors, craft knife, or cutting machine to cut out the designs from the printouts.

Making a banner? If you're going to hang the blocks as a banner, use a needle or other pointed object to pierce a hole in each of the side faces (left and right sides). Try to make the holes in similar positions and make sure they are wide enough for the string or twine you will be using. You can also use fishing line, to make your banner appear to float in the air.

STEP 5 – FOLD

Carefully fold the scored lines, then take a moment to check the folds. If you think some of them could be better, push or pull on the flaps a bit to force them into position. Small adjustments can have a big impact on the final result.

Making a banner? If you are making a banner, pass the string through the pierced holes. Make sure to secure the ends of the string so it doesn't fall off the blocks.

STEP 6 – GLUE

Apply permanent glue or double-sided tape to the flaps as close as possible to the boundaries between the flaps and the squares, that is, as close as possible to the folded lines.

There are three ways to glue the flaps:

• To make a closed block, glue all the flaps.

• To make a collapsible block (great for storing after use), leave the top and bottom lids unglued: glue only the flaps that have the word GLUE written on them.

• To make a box, leave the top lid unglued: glue the flaps with the word GLUE and also the three bottom flaps.

See below how easy it is to assemble 2-inch, 4-inch, and 6-inch blocks.

MAKE A 2-INCH BLOCK

Only one page to print and one flap to glue (but you can also glue other flaps depending on your project; read the three ways to glue above).

Score, cut, and fold the design, then glue the glue flap and close (or glue) the lids.

MAKE A 4-INCH BLOCK

The 4-inch block has four parts (three pages to print):
• the front face + top lid (they come as one part)
• the right face + back face (they come as one part)
• the left face
• the bottom lid

Start by gluing the front face to the bottom lid.

Step 1

After that, glue the front face to the right face.

Step 2

Then glue the left face to the front face.
  Step 3

This is how the 4-inch design should look with all four parts glued together:

Step 4

Now glue the back face to the left face so that all the side faces are fully connected, like a box with the lids open.

Step 5

It should look like this:
 Step 6

Finally, just close or glue the top and bottom lids.

Step 7

MAKE A 6-INCH BLOCK

Each of the six faces of the 6-inch block comes as a single piece.

Step 1

Score, cut, and fold all six parts. They are very similar and have two flaps to be folded.
front and back of the folded cutout

After folding all the flaps, start assembling the block by gluing the bottom lid to the front face.

Step 3

Step 4

Then glue the top lid to the front face.

Step 5

Now start gluing the side faces by gluing the left or the right face to the front face.

Then glue the back face to the left or right face.

Step 8

Glue the last side face to the back and front faces so that all the side faces are fully connected, like a box with the lids open.
 Step 9

Step 10 Step 11

Finally, close or glue the top and bottom lids.

That's it! Enjoy your original blocks.
